Historical Uses:
Ear candling has been used by ancient cultures for centuries. Upper class Greeks and Egyptians of long ago had this procedure done to evoke clarity of mind and a deeper level of spirituality. Medical doctors in China, India, Thailand, and the Philippines have included ear candling in their practices for centuries. American Indians burned hollow reeds or rolled up paper in the ear to clear out excess head congestion.
An ear candle, or cone, is placed in the ear. The candle is lit, creating warm vapors of smoke that circulate throughout the ear canal, warming and softening ear wax and debris. A gentle vacuum is created, which draws the softened wax and debris out of the ear canal.
Some benefits that may result from ear candling include:
- Removal of excess ear wax and debris
- Improved hearing
- Relieved sinuses
- Stabilized equilibrium
- Relief of tinnitus
- Alleviate snoring
- Promote general well being
The Process:
Ear candling is a very gentle, relaxing, painless process of ear wax removal and has been used effectively for children, teens, adults, seniors, and even pets. It is suggested that three sessions be done, four to ten days apart, when candling for the first time. After that, periodic maintenance would be based on individual need.
An average ear candling session lasts about 40–45 minutes, using one candle per ear. Additional candles take about 20 minutes longer for each candle.
